CLE Sports Series Prints
The 1924 Bulldogs were Cleveland’s first National Championship football team. Started in 1923 by Samuel H. Deutsch The Bulldogs were composed of players from the 1923 indians and the financially struggling Canton Bulldogs. They finished the season with a 7-1-1 record and were challenged for the Championship on paper by the Chicago Bears. The league thankfully decided in the favor of the Bulldogs. In the later 20’s the Bulldogs were less successful despite the addition of future college football hall of fame quarterback Bejamin “Benny Friedman” Through some complicated financial wheelings and dealings many of the Bulldogs went on to become original members of the NY Giants.

Often called America’s jazz age sport, from the 1920s to the 1940s Indoor cycling on a large high banked wooden track produced some of the countries highest paid and most popular athletes. Teams of two men would sling-shot each other around the track to gain distance on their rivals. Races were held at both Cleveland Public hall and The Cleveland Arena. Often one rider would sleep while the other rode. They were able to cover distances of almost three thousand miles in the six day race.

Most Clevelanders don’t know that their city can boast not one but two world series winning team’s. The Cleveland Buckeyes won the world series of the Negro League in1945. They were first organized by Alexander wright a hotel owner from Erie PA in 1941. The team had a number of all-star players during the 1940s, including pitcher Gene Bremmer, first baseman Archie Ware, and catcher Quincy Trouppe. Perhaps the best of the Buckeyes was Sam Jethroe, the centerfielder who was the league's most valuable player in 1945. They played games at both Cleveland Stadium and at the old League Park.

For the first half of the 20th Century the City of Cleveland was often a major professional hockey hotbed. The Cleveland Barons long history of success started as charter members of the American Hockey League. The Barons were formed by Cleveland sports promoter Al Sutphin. In 1937 Sutphin built the Cleveland Arena expressly to be the home of his AHL hockey team. With the arena completed, Sutphin held a public contest for the naming off the team and The Barons was chosen as the winner. The years from 1937 to 1964 were golden for Cleveland hockey. The franchise would go on to win 9 regular season titles and eight Calder Cup playoff championships. The last in the 1963-64 season. Their games often drew crowds in excess of 10,000 to their home ice.

Imagine a raucus Cleveland Public Hall with over 10,000 screaming fans in attendance to see greats like Joe Lapchick and Dutch Dehnert taking on and defeating the Brooklyn Arcadians for the first national title in ABL history. First formed in 1920 The Cleveland Rosenblums were the brainchild of Cleveland clothing store magnate Max Rosenblum. If you’re talking titles The Rosenblums with ABL titles in 1925, 1928, and 1929 are arguably the most successful pro basketball team in Cleveland’s history a full fifty years before the Cleveland Cavaliers.
