CVNP Parks Prints
Having been a road cyclist for many years, I thought I had experienced as much fun and danger on a bicycle as there was to have. Then I rode the CVNP’s East Rim Trail. The first time I had ridden a mountain bike. My first comment when my Wife asked about it was “It’s both wonderfully horrible and horribly wonderful”. In short it’s everything I wanted to do on a bicycle when I was 12. Sadly, I’m not 12 now. I hope to get better at riding this challenging trail for many years to come.
Many thanks to all the volunteers from the Cleveland Area Mountain Bike Association (CAMBA) and the Conservancy for the CVNP who created and worked on this trail.
My inspiration for this print was the beautiful contrast between the light under the canopy of trees in the heavily wooded areas and the full sunlight in the meadow sections of the trail. You quickly go from bright sun into deep shadow in just a few fast feet.

If you grew up in Akron like I did in the 60s & 70s the CVNP Ledges Trail was a major part of your recreational kid life along with Sand Run and Big Bend parks. I remember every year I think we would go on a school field trip that involved an actual field. Not to mention scary stories and visits to ice box cave where we dared each other to go deeper in the cave. This print is one of the amazing, seemingly gravity defying ledges that overshadows the western leg of the trail and the fascinating patterns in the eroded and weathered ledge faces.

My little town of Hudson, Ohio sits just to the east of the Cuyahoga Valley. Carved by the Cuyahoga river that meanders along a very confused path until finally joining with Lake Erie after a trip through downtown Cleveland. The Cuyahoga Valley National Park was established in the 1970s and contains a myriad of attractions but without a doubt it's show piece is Brandywine Falls. Composed of multiple layers of sandstone and shale, the differing strata give the waterfall a bridal veil appearance as the water tumbles from layer to layer down the 65 ft. face toward huge boulders at it's base. A long boardwalk and stairs descends past sandstone outcroppings and ledges to a a viewing platform at just the right spot.

The Cuyahoga Valley National Park. Northeast Ohio's best kept well-known secret, A Great Blue Heron catches a small bluegill amongst the reeds and water lilies of Beaver Marsh Park.

“I grew up about a mile from Brandywine Falls and visited countless times. I live in Cincinnati and this will print
will be a nice reminder and memory of the CVNP and one of my favorite places at home. Truth is, I’ve been
eyeing this print up for some time, and finally decided to make the purchase.”
One of my favorite pastimes when I was a kid was “creeking”. Don’t ask me why but great status was conferred on the finder of the largest crayfish in the stream. Hundreds of rocks turned over in a day. My own kids loved it just as much and one of their favorite spots was always The Blue Hen Trail creek. The upper falls is tremendously unimpressive compared to the amount of water and drop other falls in the CVNP have, but there’s something about it’s natural sculptural quality that has a great primordial mood about it. That feeling is what I was hoping most to capture with this print.
