Clevelands’s Severance Hall is both a treat for the eyes as well as the ears. A crown jewel in Cleveland’s crown if ever there was one. It’s somewhat unassuming renaissance stone exterior belies the madness of the gilt, pattern and color within. The interior is a mix of an Egyptian inspired lobby and an over the top phantasmagorical (yeah, I went there) art deco performance hall. It perfectly embodies the styles of it’s 1930s times. All that is not to mention it is the long-time home of perhaps the world’s greatest orchestra.

With this piece I wanted to highlight the exterior’s sometimes hard to see focal point, The sculptural frieze above the one time main entrance. Two classical gods of music figures along with the instruments that produce the sounds within are given their due.
