CLE Icon Series Prints
Once home to 5 different theaters at the same time, Playhouse Square is a world all its own on Cleveland’s near east side. The Ohio, the State, then the Hanna and Allen and finally the Palace Theaters were all built in 1921.
Featuring every entertainment from movies to vaudeville shows the Square had a great run of 40 years until the adoption of television and the rise of suburbia almost killed them off.
Thankfully the 1970’s brought an immense civic effort by the new Playhouse Square Foundation and many others to revitalize the area which culminated in Playhouse Square being placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.
Today Playhouse Square remains an entertainment and arts mecca in a revitalized downtown.

Well, whether you like it or not, It’s the dawn of a new era for Cleveland and professional Cleveland baseball!
On the bright side by the end of next year Cleveland’s Hope Memorial Bridge and it’s eight Guardians will no longer be Cleveland’s favorite little secret. The Guardians of Traffic will be famous and admired in all their art deco glory from coast to coast.
I thought it was a great time to design another version of my original guardians print featuring the second of the two helmet styles and the tanker truck full of (no doubt) Rockefeller’s Standard oil. It just had to be at dawn with Progressive Field in the background. I also wanted to play with showing the close proximity relationship of the Guardians and their new baseball home.

The Cuyahoga River is plainly the reason there is a Cleveland. It's story closely mirrors the development of this city that surrounds it. Even though it has had a tragic past, It has battled back with the help of many volunteers and advocates and now stands poised to fuel the rebirth of Cleveland's waterfront development dreams.
With this image I wanted to catch the mood of an early morning workout, rowing on the cuyahoga bathed in the lights of Veterans Memorial Bridge just before the sun breaks the horizon.

The Cleveland Flats have been central (literally) to the entire history of Cleveland. As integral as the river that runs through them, the Flats have risen and fallen in influence and prosperity may times in their history. Currently with new development on the east and west banks they are attracting many more people downtown. With a resurgence of use of the Cuyahoga for all kinds of watersports not to mention the connection of the new bike trail to Wendy Park and Whiskey Island the Flats are poised for a new golden era of prosperity downtown!
With this print I wanted to pay homage to the industrial heritage of The Flats. What better way to do that than highlight one of the jackknife bridges and a Lake Erie freighter on it’s way to offload downstream.

Situated at the center of Cleveland's Memorial Plaza this is a Fountain of many names. Some call it the Peace Fountain, some the Fountain of Eternal life. It's creator, CIA graduate Marshall Fredericks however entitled the work "Peace Rising from the Flames of War". Initiated by the Cleveland Press in 1964 the 35 ft. tall bronze figure of man reaches and rises skyward toward God and the future above a flaming globe that depicts all the beasts of the earth. It is surrounded by four granite block sculptures representing the four corners of the earth. The fountain's base holds plaques on which are etched the names of every Clevelander who has given they're lives in conflict going back to the Spanish American war.

Edgewater Park on Ohio's north coast has a storied place in Cleveland's recreational history. Originally purchased by the City's Parks Department in 1894 it's 130 acres were home to many attractions including a dance hall, baseball diamonds, playgrounds, yacht club and it's crown jewel a bath house large enough to accommodate thousands of bathers (swimmers) for changing clothes and getting a bite to eat while visiting the beach. After a decline in the 1960s the park was saved by joining it with 5 other public spaces to make up the Cleveland Lakefront State Park. This image is of my favorite spot to the east of the beach among the willow trees that hang low over the breakwater. This lone willow stands defiantly, surrounded by water on three sides daring the lake to take it's best shot.

They didn't call it the gilded age for nothing! Built in 1890 the Cleveland Arcade holds the distinction of being recognized as the first indoor shopping center in America. Upon it's completion in 1890 The Arcade was knicknamed Cleveland's crystal palace.
Modeled after the Galleria Vittorio Manuele II in Milan Italy, the Arcade was designed by John Eisenmann and George H. Smith in the Romanesque style. The main tenent of which apparently must have been to let no surface go undecorated OR ungilded in brass or gold.
With this image I wanted to portray the amazing ornament as well as the overall light and sense of space under Cleveland's most iconic glass skylight.

The first time I saw a photo of the old Cleveland Coast Guard Station I was amazed that a building with so much exotic style was approved for use by a government agency! When I first got a chance to visit I was then saddened to see it was nearly derelict and probably in danger of demolition. At the time it was so sad I didn't think it was appropriate for a poster. Fast forward a couple of years and I was delighted to learn the Cleveland Metroparks had taken over the site and are planning a renovation with an eye toward using the building as a hub for all manner of lake water sports and a northernmost destination of all the Cleveland Metroparks. This is a vision of what it will hopefully look like one day when renovations are complete.
Built in 1938 and designed by architect J. Milton Dyer the station was conceived in the Art Modern style. Anyone who didn't know it was on Lake Erie would instantly think it belonged in Miami Florida amongst the art deco hotels of the same era. I think it is obviously a very special building and will be a landmark for years to come.

Designed by the architects Benjamin Hubbel and Dominick Benes, the West Side Market opened in 1912 to help feed the rapidly growing city of Cleveland. In 1973 the building was added to the National Register of Historic Places. The Market now boasts over 100 vendors inside the main concourse with unimaginable culinary diversity. In the September 2010 issue of Food Network Magazine, the Market was named America's "Best Food Lovers' Market," and it is a popular tourist destination as well.

While enjoying my day exhibiting at last Summer's Warehouse District Festival I decided the obvious that I had to do a poster for the area. How could I go wrong, being surrounded with great victorian buildings with massive stone and iron work all being overshadowed (literally) by Cleveland's architectural Grande Dame, the Terminal Tower. The result is just that mix of scales from Terra cotta ornament to arched windows to the beyond iconic distant tower itself.

The University Circle area of Cleveland was designed to be the city of Cleveland's original garden spot. It's also the cultural center of the city with the Museum of Art, Natural History, Botanical Garden and Severance Hall all within walking distance of one another. I think maybe Wade Lagoon was meant to be a shady oasis of natural beauty to rival the manmade beauty of the artwork in the adjacent Cleveland Museum of Art.

The East and West Pierhead lights have been guarding the point where the Cuyahoga River ends it’s tortured course through Northeast Ohio and finally spills into lake Erie. Built in of cast iron in 1911, The lights have endured just over one-hundred Lake Erie winters. Often being coated in ice from windblown spray in the process. At one time the Western light housed a 5th order fresnel lens which is now on display at The Great Lakes Science Center. The Pierhead lights are now solar powered and held in private hands. Let’s hope they continue to symbolize importance of the historical bond between Lake Erie and the City of Cleveland.

The graceful arches and pillars of Cleveland's Veterans Memorial bridge (often called it's original name the Detroit Superior Bridge) announce loudly that it is from the bygone era of the teens of the last century. It is without a doubt Cleveland's showcase bridge of the many that cross the Cuyahoga River. It is Cleveland's Golden Gate.

Whiskey Island was one of the first sites visited by Moses Cleaveland when he came to the area that would come to bear his misspelled name. Later named for a distillery built there in the 1830s, Whiskey Island, like a lot of Cleveland has had an industrial and now recreational story since its formation. Great thanks are owed to the Metroparks for Whiskey Island’s and Wendy Park’s bright future.
With this piece I wanted to celebrate the brave monarch butterflies on their multi-generational journey to Mexico adding their colors to the nearly autumn cottonwood and other trees of Wendy Park.
